Loft Insulation: Pleasantly Warm Indoors
Loft insulation acts as a barrier between your home and the roof, so that heat stays inside your dwelling instead of seeping outside. Heat rises, so this is the most common way heat escapes from our homes. Currently, the government has recommended that a minimum depth of 270 mm (11”) wool insulation be installed in lofts for optimum energy efficiency. If you do not have insulation installed in your loft, or if the last time you have had it installed was more than 15 years ago, you should call us today to set up a free consultation.
The owner of an average-sized home currently using natural gas will see savings between £180-800 (depending on the size of your home) each year simply by having loft insulation installed. They will also reduce carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 1.5 tonnes. If the home uses electric or coal heat, the cost savings will be significantly higher. Installing loft insulation will typically cost the average home owner far less than they expect. Since the current types of loft insulation available on the market today will be effective for at least 40 years, you can see that your investment will pay for itself several times over during that time.
The condition of your loft
Our installers will need access to a hatch suitable for an average-sized person to fit through. Your roof must be in good shape, to ensure that there is not an existing condensation problem present in your loft. You will also need to make sure your loft has been properly emptied out prior to our consultants starting work. If there are pipes or water tanks in your loft, they will be insulated during this process as well, and then the hatch will also be draft-proofed. Installing loft insulation is a quick process (usually completed in about an hour), and is very clean.
If your loft does not have hatch access, an alternative would be to have insulation blown in. This drives a form of loose, fire-retardant insulation into your loft from the exterior of your home. For an average sized home, the cost will typically run around £x. Blowing in loft insulation usually takes only a few hours of your time and is equally effective at keeping your home’s warmth exactly where you need it – in your home!
How is loft insulation installed ?
Quilts are most commonly made of mineral & natural wool, but you can find them made of glass & rock fibre as well. These are sold in rolls of varying thicknesses. The different materials and depths used offer varying insulation properties. The most common quilt installation method is to lay the quilts down between the joists, and then to top off the first layer with another layer in the opposite direction. However, if you would like to use your loft for living or storage space, we can help you design an alternative installation method. You can use your loft as valuable storage or living space and still maintain a very energy efficient home.
